Kid Gloves 2: Play and Disaster - An installation for the Brolly Arts H2O exhibition at the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. September 2010 Each time a film is projected it punctures the present with the past and a little bit of the future leaks out. The second law of thermodynamics states that everything tends toward a state of entropy. In other words, everything is falling apart all the time. Life became a lot more interesting and tolerable when I decided to stop resisting the inherent chaos of the universe and began instead to collaborate with it. It is quite simple: everything changes. The opposite of resisting change is the celebration of it through play. By play I mean, complete immersion or absorption of an individual into an immediate environment. It is clear that we live in an unpredictable environment. It has always been so. Everything is falling apart all the time. It is a law. Choosing to surf the currents rather than swim upstream is simply more productive and interesting. Furthermore, balance is a constant negotiation. The conversation never stops. There is always the possibility of losing equilibrium. I lose it all the time. Maybe that is why I don't believe in failure. I can't afford to. One of the good things about art is that there is a lot of room to take risks and ask questions, to experiment, to "fail", to change direction, to play. There is even room to be considered a success from time to time. I think of my work as a record of these successful failures. The failure to achieve a stated ideal and the consistent dissolution of expected results. Late one night, near the end of 2008, I was all alone in a gallery space after the installation of an exhibition. I started playing around with a camera and a projector to create video feedback loops. At the time I didn't do anything with the footage. But two years later I found it again. I had forgotten how beautiful it was. When I started to digitize the media I realized that my camera was broken (I had dropped it during a recent performance and had not realized it was damaged). The video had transferred but the frame rates were all messed up, jumping around according to their own laws, and the sound was nothing more than the crackle of a vinyl record. It was perfect! I couldn't believe my good fortune. After minimal editing it was complete.
